Vivian Lyons Williams, born on June 3, 1937, in St. Louis, MO. She was born to Alvin Van Lyons and Beatrice Bell Lyons. She was born into a family with 4 sisters (Anita, Yvonne, Shirley, and Brenda) and her baby brother, Vennie). She was known for her beautiful, smile, effectious personality, distinct style at an early age, and kind heart. She graduated with her masters degree from Harris Stowe Teachers College. She married and had her first child, Andrew Courtney Davis, while in St Louis. She attended school, and worked while caring for her son. She met her 2nd husband, Dr. CW Williams a prominent general surgeon in the Charlotte area. She moved to Charlotte in 1970 and emersed herself in the community. She befriended several of Dr. Williams friends and professional colleagues. And assertively sought to become a role model and mentor to some of the young women in the community, adopting them playfully as her “nieces” and “nephews”. Her and “CW” had 2 sons, Christopher Warren Williams and Warren Christian Williams. She also became a stepmom to Dr. Charles “Chuck” Warren Williams and Pam Williams Coote. In her early career as a social worker and school administrator, she devoted herself to mentoring and encouraging young people to pursue and achieve their professional goals. She was a proud member of The Charlotte Carrousels, Moles, and supporter (widow) of the Guardsmen and Boule. Vivian was also a devoted member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. During her lifetime, she served with several organizations, as a Board of Director, for organizations that maintained a focus on youth, art, fashion, or helping the disadvantaged (African American Cultural Center, Spirit Square, McCrorey YMCA, United Way of Charlotte, Friendship Baptist’s Marzetta Kerry Scholarship Fund ). One of her proudest professional achievements was her ownership of Vivians’s a boutique in Uptown Charlotte. She was known for producing glamorous fashion shows, often utilizing the Overstreet Mall as her runway. Based on her personal love for the arts and fashion, her family and friends have created an Arts & Fashion scholarship fund in her name called Vivian’s Fashion and Arts Education Fund. The fund will be awarded to a high school senior who demonstrates exceptional talent and devotion in either the Fashion or Creative Arts disciplines.
The Vivian Lyons Williams Arts & Fashion Scholarship Fund is based on her personal love for the arts and fashion. The fund will be awarded on an annual basis to a high school senior who demonstrates exceptional talent and devotion in either of the Fashion or Creative Arts disciplines.
The fund will also be a vehicle to promote and advocate organizations that support diversity, inclusion, upliftment, higher education, financial awareness, and mental wellness.
